Crowder College Selects Innovative Biofuels Inc. to Collaborate on possible biodiesel plant on Neosho campus

(Neosho  MO)  Crowder College, long recognized for its innovation in research and utilization of alternative fuels has entered into an agreement to work with Innovative Biofuels, Inc. of St. Louis MO in designing and building a full-scale biodiesel plant.  The collaborative agreement is between Crowder’s MARET Center and Innovative Biofuels.

College officials, including President Dr.  Alan Marble, have been in discussions with Innovative President Mark Johnston about adding a fully functioning biodiesel production facility to the MARET campus.  Biodiesel is growing in acceptance within the nation’s energy strategy, but the cost of some traditional feedstocks has made it difficult to produce biodiesel profitably.  In the past five years, biodiesel plant operations have been looking for ways to convert waste vegetable oil to ASTM specification fuel.

Johnston said “Crowder is known for its research in renewable and alternative fuels.  Building a small-scale biodiesel plant would give the students an opportunity to test various feedstocks.”  In addition, biodiesel plants from around the country could use possible testing facilities at MARET and the finished product could be sold to help generate revenue.

The agreement specifies that Innovative Biofuels will work with Crowder College to develop a business plan for constructing a plant, pursue methods of project financing and help determine if plans for such a project should move toward fruition.

The MARET Center has been cited nationally for its development of alternative energy applications, including wind, solar and geo-thermal energy.  The $8-million center is located on the Crowder College campus and has been constructed to provide its own energy which powers the classrooms, meeting areas and research facility, according to Executive Director, Russell Hopper.
